Low total alkalinity is what causes pH bounce: the reading swings after every dose and nothing holds. Raising total alkalinity gives the water a buffer, so your pH settles and stays put instead of needing correcting every few days.

There are two knock-on benefits. Your sanitiser works more efficiently in properly buffered water, so the chlorine you add does more. And you reduce the corrosive conditions that attack pool surfaces, ladders, light fittings and other metal over time.
